Some very cunning hats

This weekend is Emerald City Comic-Con (ECCC) in Seattle. I missed out on getting tickets in time, but there's always next year! So in the spirit of awesome geekiness I thought I'd share one of my most recent knitting projects!

I'm a huge fan of the show Firefly and its accompanying movie Serenity. I was even planning on cosplaying as Kaylee! That being said, one day I decided that I was missing out by not having a hat similar to the one made popular by the episode "The Message" and Jayne Cobb played by Adam Baldwin. Let's just say, "a man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything."

I had a hard time finding yarn for this particular project. A lot of other crafters tend to make it using really bright yarns, but I wanted it to be more like what he had in the show. I finally settled upon
Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Gold, Pumpkin, and Paprika. It's still not perfect/true to the colors of the original, but I like it anyway!

And apparently others did too, because I've already had a few orders for hats since I posted these pictures. I would be selling them on my Etsy, but I'd rather not be sued because someone copyrighted the hat for sale. So for now, I'm open for commissions if anyone is interested!

The pattern is based off of this one from Smariek Knits. I changed a few things to make it work for me.

I'm sure you didn't know this about me, but I disregard gauge on a regular basis. Instead I just complain every time I have to rip out a hat or whatever else I'm working on at the time. (It happens a lot.) That's exactly how this project was figured too. Even though the pattern calls for size 7 needles (which are some of the only ones I have/use in DPN's) and worsted weight yarn the CO of 96 stitches was WAAAY too many for my small-ish head. So I went back to a hat that I had made up and cast on 84 instead. I followed the color chart for the hat and then skipped to decrease row 3 at the end. For the ear-flaps I picked up 19 stitches and left 23 in between. I did 24 rows before the decreases, and then started at row 5.

Oh and my shirt is from Threadless! (But it's not available anymore.)

  1. Awesome job Kelsey!
    I crocheted a Cunning Hat, but--as you mentioned--it's a bit bright.

  2. Nothing wrong with that! :) As long as you're happy with it. The orange on mine still bothers me because it's still not as orange as the one in the show.

  5. I charge $20 for the hats +$5 shipping in the U.S. so if I were to ship to Australia it would be (according to USPS calculator) $25 shipping. I'm not sure if you'd still be interested, but if you are we can work something out! :)

  6. I could be wrong. I really hope I am because that seems like way too much for shipping! :( Even when I sent stuff to my now ex-boyfriend overseas it didn't cost as much. I'm going to keep looking for other ways of finding out how much shipping is.

  7. I love your version of Jayne Cobb's hat! I can't knit to save my life so I am super impressed with anyone who can knit. And your hat is super adorable with that shirt.
