Selling boots to geeks the right way

Not sure if you've seen these ads lately, but...

Boots for fashion-friendly zombies!

And along the same lines...

Now there are THREE?!

Then Sink your teeth into these!

These boot ads are on fire!

Whoever is in the JustFab marketing team really knows how to play to geek culture to get attention.
The Walkers one was the first one that I saw, and immediately shared it. However instead of making me want to buy boots, it just makes me excited for more Walking Dead and Game of Thrones! (I'm currently on the second book right now!) (Okay, maybe I want the boots a little too.)

What do you think of these ads? Have you seen any other geek culture references in ads lately?

p.s. I'm not being paid by JustFab or being reimbursed in any way to share these photos. I just thought they were neat. Kbai!

Geeking out in Seattle

You may have seen my post about going to Urban Craft Uprising this past weekend, but you might not have seen all the other fun I had after it! Unless you follow me on Instagram, then you saw some of the awesomeness.

So I sort of joined the Empire...

April Sprinkles turns to the dark side in Seattle

Just for a little bit, I swear!

April Sprinkles turns to the dark side in SeattleIt's almost impossible to turn to the dark side when you're wearing an ice cream print top and polka dot shoes. That didn't stop me for trying to strike a badass pose though! (Poor guy in the suit in that heat! Mr. Vader was fake.)

Then we saw a few more sites, the usual...

I feel like someday I will need to photoshop this.

After that I had a brief brush with extermination...

We finished off our trip by stopping at Kerry Park.

Gotta love that view!

I really enjoy being so close to Seattle that I can visit any time I want, but without the hassle of living in such a big/busy city.

Do you have any big cities close by that you like to visit? Let me know in the comments!
If you've been to Seattle before, leave me a suggestion on where to visit next! I'm usually up for new adventures.

The Snitch has been caught- 150 points to Hufflepuff!

Hufflepuff wins!

Less than a week ago I walked into the craft store with the intention of getting some elastic for a skirt, and I walked out with the makings of some awesomely nerdy jewelry!

Golden Snitch Neclace

A Golden Snitch necklace!
I found the wings in the 50% off boxes, and immediately scoured the bead aisles for the perfect snitch golden ball bodies. I came across a pack of 18 that were (thankfully) also 50% off. However, there weren't any more wings to be found in that store! I found another pair, but it was also the last pair by a different brand. Weird right? They look exactly the same!

Golden Snitch Necklaces

But seriously though, I've been wanting to make a snitch necklace for quite a while now, and I guess this was just the opportune time. It's a fairly simple construction too, so it didn't take very long.

And since I have so many "bodies" left, and have now found a supplier for the wings, I will be making more and offering them in my Etsy along with the Hogwarts house themed flowers that I keep forgetting to post.

Golden Snitch Neclace

I absolutely love my new Snitch necklace! Though, if I ever were to be in the Harry Potter universe, I don't think I'd be a Quidditch player. I'm not great at sports and afraid of heights, so I think I'd rather just watch... lol.

And yes, I am a Hufflepuff, and proud of it! Loyal, friendly, and good at finding things. That's basically me in a nutshell.

So tell me, what House are you in?

P.S. don't forget to enter the giveaway I'm hosting for DeBoop Shop! You could win one very awesome key fob!

My Geek space!

Ever since I saw Molly over at The Princess and The Geek's post about sharing her Geek Space, I knew I had to get in on this too! Go check hers out!

Show off your geek space #Geekspace: April Sprinkles

So here we go! Ready to see my Geek Space? It's my room!

April Sprinkles: Geek space: TARDIS and Hoth Poster
I figured I might as well get the big things out of the way first. Why yes, I do happen to have a TARDIS in my room! I won it from the store Fuego in a drawing a few months ago. I promise my Hoth poster isn't as crooked as it looks. (I hope.) I got that from the best comic and geekery shop in Pike Place Market. Oh, and yes I do have a heart-shaped head/food board! And it's awesome.

Now lets move on to my collections!

April Sprinkles Geek Space

This shelf is my favorite! So many of my fandoms are represented. I still have yet to get anything for Supernatural though.

So we have a Pokeball/masterball from the Goodwill Outlet, Stormtrooper mouse and R2-D2 mug from Disney World, Small skull for Sherlock, Jurassic Park skeleton, 11th Doctor and Jack sparrow Lego dudes, Hamtaro, Rex from Toy-Story also found at the GWO, globe pencil sharpener, and Chocolate Frog box from Universal Orlando Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

April Sprinkles Geek Space

More dinos! You can pretty much assume that most of my dinosaurs are from the Goodwill Outlet. At one point I had more than 200. (Not kidding) Most of them ended up with my ex, sadly. I do still have a bunch in storage though. Also squirrel because I love them. Sushi cat was from my first trip to the Goodwill Outlet! Apparently I'm too lazy to put him up on my wall. The Jayne Cobb scratch art is from one of my artistic buddies. I love it! It fits in perfectly with my hat! Those Moon-shaped bottles are pretty boss too. I've had them for years. We hoard collect blue bottles sometimes.

April Sprinkles Geek Space

Did I mention I like Hello Kitty? Because if I didn't before it must be pretty obvious now. This isn't even all of it! I also like cupcakes and squirrels, lol. That way cool spider (the only time I will ever say that, by the way) I got from a vendor when I did my craft show!

..."Not my gumdrop button!"
Another great find from the GWO, lol.

April Sprinkles Geek Space

This is just part of my library. I wanted to focus on my favorite books instead of the crafty books that I have. This isn't called "my crafty space" after all! However, I am going to include my awesome little sewing buddies. Somewhat creepy, but still pretty entertaining to me! haha.

There are only a few books on this shelf that I haven't read yet, but I plan to! Oh goodness, so many favorites. (Jane Austen and John Green.) And there are even more books hidden behind these! I ran out of space...

And a few other miscellaneous bits of my room because reasons:
April Sprinkles Geek SpaceOn the left there are a couple of DIY's I've never shared. The silhouette is actually a DIY I came up with on my own! I'm sure I'll actually eventually come up with a tutorial for it. (Maybe.) Then of course my hand knit Jayne Cobb hat always on display, and wee little Hedwig!

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into the geeky parts of my room! I have a lot more all over, but my room is actually so small that it's been a challenge (I've been avoiding facing) trying to organize properly in order to show off all the awesome bits. I guess this sort of counts as somewhat of a "haul" from the Goodwill Outlet because I mentioned it so many times, lol. I just really love having weird odds and ends on display, especially if they're geeky!

I love seeing everyone's geek spaces, so if you have one of your own be sure to link up with The Princess and the Geek and share your own!

Hogwarts house flowers for the fashionable nerd

I've been pretty lax with posting this week. I planned on writing posts in advance, but nothing would come out right. Instead I've been working on finally finishing up some projects to go up in my Etsy once they're photographed!

You may have already seen this, but I'm excited to announce the newest addition will be: Hogwarts houses themed flowers!

April Sprinkles Hogwarts houses themed flower hair clips/pins

I am a proud Hufflepuff and I know most of my friends belong to the other houses. I just love the idea of alternative Hogwarts pride! I'm thinking of other ways to make them with different centers too.

After that, I'm thinking of doing some Avengers/superhero themed flowers! I was inspired by this originally while making these flowers because Gryffindor looks pretty similar to Iron Man's colors and Slytherin could easily be used for Loki too. The others I'd like to make are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Spiderman, Superman, Batman... you get the idea. :)

If you're interested in any of these, send me an e-mail and I will get it sent to you before these get put up in my Etsy. I am also open to taking custom orders. If they make the colors in sparkle yarn I can make it for you! These flowers are $7 plus $3 shipping (same as on April Sprinkles Etsy.)

Are there any other themed flowers you'd like to see? Let me know in the comments below!

Talk nerdy to me! (Introducing the month-end photo roundup)

Something I want to do at the end of every month is a roundup of my favorite pictures of the month or of a genre. It might turn into a link-up if I get enough people interested. This month I decided that I wanted to share my favorite geeky pictures I've taken in the past year or so.

This is the awesomeness you've been missing out on:

Craftylilkels on Instagram
1, 2, 3, 4, -, 6, 7, 8, -

Most of them are on Instagram. The two that aren't are the Hobbit poster (from seeing the Hobbit with my parents), and the Pokeball picture. That one I took when I was visiting my parents before I moved in with them. The Pokeball is from Burger King and has one of those 25ct gold cards inside of it. My personal favorite is the "Hello Sweetie" + TARDIS pic.

I have several photo editors on my phone including Pixlr Express, Aviary, and Picsart. They're all free and a bunch of fun to play with!

So tell me, would you be interested in joining in and doing a photo roundup with me? Or do you have any similar link-ups you would suggest I participate in? I'd love to know!

Some very cunning hats

This weekend is Emerald City Comic-Con (ECCC) in Seattle. I missed out on getting tickets in time, but there's always next year! So in the spirit of awesome geekiness I thought I'd share one of my most recent knitting projects!

I'm a huge fan of the show Firefly and its accompanying movie Serenity. I was even planning on cosplaying as Kaylee! That being said, one day I decided that I was missing out by not having a hat similar to the one made popular by the episode "The Message" and Jayne Cobb played by Adam Baldwin. Let's just say, "a man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything."

I had a hard time finding yarn for this particular project. A lot of other crafters tend to make it using really bright yarns, but I wanted it to be more like what he had in the show. I finally settled upon
Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Gold, Pumpkin, and Paprika. It's still not perfect/true to the colors of the original, but I like it anyway!

And apparently others did too, because I've already had a few orders for hats since I posted these pictures. I would be selling them on my Etsy, but I'd rather not be sued because someone copyrighted the hat for sale. So for now, I'm open for commissions if anyone is interested!

The pattern is based off of this one from Smariek Knits. I changed a few things to make it work for me.

I'm sure you didn't know this about me, but I disregard gauge on a regular basis. Instead I just complain every time I have to rip out a hat or whatever else I'm working on at the time. (It happens a lot.) That's exactly how this project was figured too. Even though the pattern calls for size 7 needles (which are some of the only ones I have/use in DPN's) and worsted weight yarn the CO of 96 stitches was WAAAY too many for my small-ish head. So I went back to a hat that I had made up and cast on 84 instead. I followed the color chart for the hat and then skipped to decrease row 3 at the end. For the ear-flaps I picked up 19 stitches and left 23 in between. I did 24 rows before the decreases, and then started at row 5.

Oh and my shirt is from Threadless! (But it's not available anymore.)

The end of all that I love (Aka Futurama)

The show perpetually canceled and brought back to life has "finally" ended. Like most other Futurama fans, I still cling to some sort of hope that the show will be brought back again. I'm surprised, but happy, that they didn't all die at the end like I thought they would... To anyone who thinks spoilers are bad: give me a break, that was a good spoiler right? Kinda gives you hope, doesn't it?

I've followed the show in some form (even just by casually watching) since the beginning. I never got into the Simpsons, but Futurama was always spot on. I can, and have watched episodes multiple times and cannot get sick of them. I quote this show on a regular basis. I own all but the current season including the movies. I guess what I'm trying to say is: I freaking love this show.

Let me give you a rundown of all the Futurama crafts and merchandise I have:

Crocheted Brain Slug handmade by me (2009)

Bender T-Shirt from ThinkGeek (2009)

No longer in stock!

Mars University DIY freezer paper stencil T-Shirt (2010)

Bender the dyed disc golf putter (2009)

 Mom figurine (2011)
(Picture to be added later once I find it after unpacking... click on the link above to see it!)

She gave me one of my favorite words, "crapspackle", but I was really disappointed when I got her in the mystery box.

And soon-to-be-mine Futurama/Doctor Who smash up tee

Sorry, you can't have this one! It was a one day only sale from Ript

I am a die-hard fan of this franchise, and I always will be. This isn't even half of what I had planned on making. Someday I will make a Nibbler. *Looks off into the distance* Someday.

R.I.P Futurama, until you (hopefully) come back again!

Some Adorable Amigurumis I've made

Unless you are friends with me on Ravelry, or follow me on Flickr, you wouldn't know just how many little amigurumis (Crochet or knitted stuffed toys that my spelling corrector would rather have me call "fumigators") I've made over the past few years. Many I haven't shared on here and I thought it was time to change that since I'm really proud of them.

First we have: Brain Slug

April Sprinkles: Brain Slug amigurumi
Pattern on Hooks and Needles

This guy is my favorite! I have been watching Futurama from the beginning and it's still one of my favorite shows. The marine and I quote it on a daily basis "for no raisin"! (10 points to you if you know what I'm talking about!)

Next up: Cthulhu

April Sprinkles: Cthulhu amigurumi
Pattern on Instructables
AKA the Elder God. I don't know that much more about him, but one of my friends does! Funny thing is sometimes I make presents like this for my friends on a whim. I ended up giving this to her on my birthday three years ago.

Same goes for this little panda ball that I gave to another friend before I moved to NC for the first time, for possibly no reason.

April Sprinkles: Panda Ball Amigurumi from Lion Brand Yarn
Pattern on Lion Brand

Or maybe because it was her birthday... hmm
Either way, cute!

Then there's this penguin that I had promised to my friend (who loves penguins) for years and finally gave to her:

April Sprinkles: Baby Penguin amigurumi

...Without taking a picture myself! Can you believe that? That almost never happens. You might not be able to tell but he is full of adorableness. Except that the fun fur yarn from Lion Brand is a PAIN IN MY ASS. I love him because he's so cute, but have bad memories of NOT KNOWING WHERE MY STITCHES WERE. Crocheters, you know what I'm talking about.

But for some reason I decided to take it up again and used the leftovers to make this furry rock!

April Sprinkles: Tribble amigurumi

I mean Tribble!
You can read about her here.
No accounts of multiplying... yet. Life form is possibly deceased.

I know it might not seem like that many, but amigurumis are little feats of engineering that I'm still astonished I was able to create with just a hook and yarn. It boggles my mind.

BONUS: Lolrus!

April Sprinkles: Lolrus Stuffed toy
It has a buhket. :3 Don't know what a lolrus is? I've done the searching for you, enjoy.
This guy I sewed by hand out of craft felt and made up the pattern entirely out of my own head. I was really proud! Too bad he died a horrible death at the hands of my friend's cat :P haha.
R.I.P. stuffed Lolrus, you will be missed.

Have you ever tried your hand at making a stuffed animal/toy? (Crochet or not.) Let me know how it turned out!

Thanks for reading
